In this revealing technical interview, the developer provided three of its finest to answer our questions: game director Tony Buckley, WipEout HD graphics engine lead Chris Roberts, and finally WipEout HD: Fury lead programmer Stephen Taylor.Īnd while we had access to these gentlemen, we thought we'd get some of the most popular WipEout HD FAQs out of the way first. The expansion to the game, Wipeout HD Fury, was released on 23 July 2009. The mode crashes the game if either 2097 or WIP3OUT HUD style is selected, but is otherwise fully playable. We talked about the game's dynamic 1080p resolution back when the original launched, and Sony itself discussed the technique in more depth at its recent Develop presentation, but we wanted to know more the implementation and some of the other technologies Studio Liverpool used to create this superb game. Available in racebox menu as a mode option after. Studio Liverpool made 'full HD' the target resolution, making it one of the few developers to make good on the 1080p dream, coming up with brand new PS3 rendering technologies in order to create a game that runs as close to a sustained 60FPS as possible. Packed with all the content from WipEout HD, WipEout HD Fury and WipEout 2048, Omega Collection features 26 reversible circuits, 46 unique ships, a ton of game modes and a mixture of new and classic music tracks. It is the eighth installment of the WipEout series and was first released on the PlayStation Network on 25 September 2008 in both Europe and North America, and on 29 October 2008 in Japan. Of course, from a technical perspective, WipEout HD and its furious pseudo-sequel are of prime interest to Digital Foundry not just because they are beautiful-looking, technically adept games. WipEout HD is a futuristic racing video game developed by Sony Studio Liverpool and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3. The game scored an immense 9/10 on Eurogamer this week, meaning it is utterly unmissable. However, describing it as a mere add-on is something of a disservice: the £7.99 download offers almost as much new content as there was in the original game, and while the core gameplay is initially very familiar, the execution of the new game modes really is WipEout as you've never played it before. Wipeout HD alone is a superb game, but when paired with its Fury expansion it becomes a near perfect package. There really is no option, if you love Wipeout HD then Fury is a must have. It's one of the crown jewels of the PlayStation Store, and last week SCEE updated the brilliant WipEout HD with a brand new Fury expansion pack. The most complete and polished downloadable content yet released on Playstation 3. Experiment with letter-spacing and do what seems right to you. There are a lot of different typefaces and a single rule doesn’t apply to all of them. If we look at my previous example, in the guidelines for “Roboto” and “San Francisco” typefaces, letter-spacing is applied to body text even though San Francisco has a dedicated “ SF Pro Display” for headlines and “ SF Pro Text” for body text, letter-spacing is still used to refine them. 5% you will see that the text is now easier to read. At a small size, the letters are too close to each other, which leads to poor legibility. Let’s take, for example, condensed fonts. (There’s an argument that he was only referring to blackletter fonts.) Some designers took it as a hard rule and now never adjust the letter-spacing of lowercase text.īased on my practice and by looking at the work of designers I can’t agree with Goudy, because sometimes small changes can make a big difference in how your text performs. If you ever read anything about letter-spacing, you’ve probably have seen this popular wisdom from typographer Frederic Goudy: “Anyone who would letter-space lowercase would steal sheep”. They are well balanced and it saves a lot of time. If you happen to design a lot of apps or you’re planning to do that, one thing that helps me is using the default Material Design and Apple guidelines for their typefaces. It will be a good starting point for you, but you can always apply additional adjustments: I’ve tested several guidelines for letter-spacing and the one that was published by Bazen Agency works for a lot of popular typefaces. These exact numbers are not going to work that well for other typefaces, but after trying different approaches I can state that it’s a common pattern. If the font size is bigger, letter-spacing becomes negative. Headlines from 20 to 48 pixels have either a positive letter-spacing value or none. Let’s take a look at the “Roboto” and “San Francisco” typefaces (the first one is used in Material Design and the second one in Apple’s ecosystem). There are no strict rules for letter-spacing - there are a lot of typefaces and all of them require an individual approach - but if you look at how big companies like Google and Apple treat their typefaces, you can find a lot of valuable information there. It can be fixed by increasing or decreasing the letter-spacing value. However, the problem with headlines is that at larger scales the space between letters looks unbalanced. If you are using well designed fonts, you can be sure that they are calibrated well, and you won’t need to make any major adjustments to them. This applies to both large and small font sizes. So in order to achieve better readability, space needs to be increased. When capital letters are next to each other, the space between them is too tight. Letter-Spacing Capital LettersĬapital letters are designed with the intention that they will appear at the beginning of a sentence or proper noun, in combination with lowercase letters. What I mean by that is simply don’t make the distance between letters too big or too small even if you think it looks good, people will struggle reading it, and that will ruin their experience. Regarding letter-spacing, if you are just getting into typography, the best thing you can do is not overuse it. The legibility and readability of your text depend on things like line-height, paragraph length, font size, typeface choice, letter-spacing, and much more. How Letter-Spacing Affects Legibility and Readability It means you don’t have to apply it to all your text, but in order to have an understanding when it’s necessary, you should know some basic principles, and use good typefaces. The fun part is that they won’t even notice it - that’s the whole point of the job.īear in mind that typographers think about letter-spacing and kerning when designing a typeface. By adjusting letter-spacing to the environment you are working with you will help readers consume your information faster, and more efficiently. Words act differently depending on their size, color, and the background they are on. The main purpose of letter-spacing is to improve the legibility and readability of the text. I believe that practice and a lot of observation will change the way you treat letter-spacing in your work as well. Kerning is best left to type designers, besides which, unlike letter-spacing there is currently no way to control kerning in CSS. Some people confuse it with kerning, but these two are different letter-spacing affects the whole line of text, whereas kerning adjusts the space between two individual letters at the time. Letter-spacing is about adding and removing space between letters. Some have good intentions, and some do not, but they are all no more than opinions. One of the difficulties the commission had in attacking Ockham was that he was in fact a fairly conservative theological and his religious statements mostly had adherents among the leading Franciscans. By 1326 there was a list of 51 charges against Ockham which was later reduced to 49. With the list being now the basis for the charge against Ockham, a commission was set up the try him.įirst the commission decided that Ockham's teaching on physics, namely on time, motion and place, should be removed from the list of charges unless it was part of a theological statement. Anyway Lutterell went through Ockham's work and made a list of 56 statement which he deemed to be erroneous or heretical. Perhaps Lutterell was the reason that Ockham was now being tested for he may have decided that Ockham's views were dangerous when he was a student at Oxford. Rather surprisingly, the person who was to read Ockham's commentary on the Book of Sentences of Peter Lombard was John Lutterell who had been chancellor of Oxford University when Ockham studied there. Ockham went to France, crossing the Channel in the summer of 1324, and continued to Provence where he now resided at the Avignon convent. He was summoned to Avignon in 1324 to have his lectures and writings examined for heretical or mistaken teaching. Indeed Ockham explained his views and no action was taken against him but clearly he had been singled out as unsuitable to teach, and the matter was not allowed to rest. to explain his views on thirteen propositions derived from his teaching on the Aristotelian categories, especially the category of 'relation'. Ockham's opinions aroused strong opposition and he was summoned by the Franciscan provincial chapter :. is probably the most comprehensive original logical treatise written in the period between Aristotle's "Organon" and Bolzano's "Wissenschaftslehre" (1837). In particular Ockham wrote the monumental three-part Summa logicae during these four years which Corcoran says:. The scope of the apparently original concepts, problems, and results found in his works is impressive, if not astounding. William of Ockham was certainly among the most imaginative, competent, and prolific of Medieval logicians. During these years he wrote many deep works on philosophy and logic. Ockham lectured on logic and natural philosophy in a Franciscan school from 1321 to 1324 while he waited to return to university to study for his doctorate. In June 1318 Ockham was granted a licence to hear confessions and by 1320 he completed study for his bachelor's degree. The text was used as a framework for students to develop their own original positions and to debate with their teachers and fellow students. It was required that every student working for a higher degree in theology would lecture and comment on the Book of Sentences which is what Ockham did at Oxford in 1317- 1319. Peter Lombard, a conservative theologian, wrote the text as a reaction against some who at the time were applying Aristotle's logic to theology. Peter was a 12 th century Italian theologian who had written the work to state clearly the position found in the Scriptures and that of the Church fathers on Christian doctrine. He was then sent to Oxford to study for a theological degree.Īt Oxford Ockham lectured on the Book of Sentences of Peter Lombard. There is no direct evidence to support which of these alternatives Ockham followed but it must have one of them. After this some students were sent to Paris for further training, the rest taught at a convent. We do know that he was ordained a subdeacon by the archbishop of Canterbury in Southwark, London, in 1306 which certainly supports him being trained in London. His education was in a Franciscan convent and it was almost certainly the London convent since it acted as the educational centre for the area in which he lived. Nothing is known of his parents or his early life before he entered the Franciscan order at the age of fourteen. He is also known as the "More than Subtle Doctor" or the "Venerable Inceptor". Biography William of Ockham's name is sometimes written William Occam. |
